From February 21st to 25th, 2022, MIR students participated in the first MIR Championship: the Guerledus Challenge at the Guerlédan Lake in Brittany, France. This championship provided the MIR students with the opportunity to compete against students from ENSTA Bretagne, an French engineering school for innovation in the maritime, defense and high-tech sectors.

The students had at their disposal DD-boats, a kind of model boat revisited from a robotic point of view, for which the criteria of navigation, radio control, manoeuvrability, speed-elocity, robustness, and autonomy of the propellers and temperature/vibration will be key factors of success.

The first challenge was to execute a buoy forward and return mission among 4 teams (AVATAH, BLS, FNI and Oppossum). Following a first trial, each team had to present the viewing of the log file to the jury after the mission. In case of incident (network breakdown, damage, hardware issue, etc.), the team was allowed to make a second trial. A second challenge was also organised with Lissajoux curve tracking in compliance with the same rules.

A jury composed of Ms Mathilde Jeannin, Robotics Engineer, Polytechnique Eng. School, Ms Elena Ivanova, Phd in control theory, Polytechnique Eng. School, Ms Céline Barbier, Project Officer, Univ. of Toulon, Mr Ricard Marxer, Univ. Assoc. Professor, Univ. of Toulon, Ms Claire Dune, Professor, Univ. of Toulon, Mr Vincent Hugel, Univ. Professor, Univ. of Toulon, Mr Luc Jaulin, Univ. professor, University of Western Brittany and Mr Benoît Zerr, Professor, ENSTA-Bretagne, established a ranking of the competing teams for each challenge. The prizes for each prize-winning team rewarded the efforts of the students who designed and programmed their own robots.

Beyond the spirit of the competition, MIR students were able to share knowledge in the field of marine robotics and mechatronics and to enjoy a week of fellowship with the students of ENSTA Bretagne.
